What is your involvement with Florida Philanthropic Network?

"I have been involved with FPN since I joined the Community Foundation Tampa Bay six years ago. I have had the honor of chairing the Florida Education Funders over the last few years and participating in the Public Policy Committee. What influenced you to join? I am a big believer in community collaborations and statewide member networks. I have always looked for opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn from others. Participation was a natural fit for me as a transition form my previous role as a college administrator."

Name one thing you find special about the Florida philanthropic community.

"The vast knowledge and viewpoints as well as the shared passion for community improvement. I am always energized after meeting with my FPN colleagues regardless of the topic of the meeting whether it is the annual conference, a member network meeting, or just a meeting on a special topic."

Are there any partnerships or collaborations you have found most meaningful to you in the last year?

"Every Florida Education Funders meeting is informative and insightful, but our meeting at the annual conference was especially so.  We simulated a Data Walk for the participants with help from the Florida Chamber Foundation and the Lastinger Center for Learning at UF. The model is intended to democratize outcome data, making it less threatening and accessible for all. Participants were very engaged, and we have heard of a few groups now exploring the use of this methodology."

What's the biggest challenge you've faced with your philanthropic efforts? How have you overcome them?

"Attempting to continue and improve our work during times of crisis (COVID, hurricanes response, etc.). We have tried to be very creative during these times and have developed innovative ways to get the needs of the nonprofits in our communities directly to the philanthropists including our fundholders such as the Critical Needs List."

What fuels your cup – in life and at work?

"Working with others to make a difference in our community. Our community has so much need, more than any one person or any one organization can address. It does truly take a village to make lasting change."

Can you share one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a career in philanthropy?

"Do not try to make a difference all by yourself. Network and make connections with others doing similar work. Mimic the very best from others and build something from that knowledge that will truly make a difference in your community."
