Meet Wanda Willis
Vice President, Civic Leadership
The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida

What is your involvement with Florida Philanthropic Network? What influenced you to join?

"I have been a member the past couple of years and had the opportunity to present at one of the FPN conferences. Being a member has provided an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and collaborate with passionate leaders in the philanthropic community who are committed to improving lives in Florida."

Name one thing you find special about the Florida philanthropic community.

"The Florida philanthropic community is special because of the way people care about their communities.  There is such a diversity of causes that support a wide range of initiatives, from environmental conservation to education, healthcare, and social justice which is a reflection of the state’s diverse population and unique challenges."

Are there any partnerships or collaboration efforts you have found most meaningful to you in the last year?

"Collaboration with other Foundations in modeling our My Village Project initiatives which focuses on small nonprofit agencies and supporting their community initiatives."

What's the biggest challenge you've faced with your philanthropic efforts? How have you overcome them?

"Measuring impact and evaluating effectiveness has been a challenge in some of the philanthropic efforts along with sustainability and ensuring projects that are funded can sustain the work over time without constant funding. Secondly, the alignment of goals and finding common ground between donor intentions and community needs. We have worked to provide updates through our impact reports and other communication tools in informing our donors on community issues."

What fuels your cup - in life and at work?

"This is a great question as I work each day to find “joy” in every single day…joy in the work and joy in life.  Helping donors find the passion to share their gifts to make our community a better place to live, work and play is a privilege that I get to do each day.  Although I work hard with long hours and days, I am intentional about spending time with family and friends doing what makes me happy. Living in Florida, it is easy to find a space that brings joy and peace…. the beach is always close and mixed with a little sunshine is perfect…add music and a good book, that is joy and fills my cup!

Can you share one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a career in philanthropy?

"My advice to someone who is considering a career in philanthropy is to gain an understanding of the sector and the social impact of the work; gain relevant experience with nonprofit organizations to help in understanding the challenges the organizations face. Take time to learn the trends in philanthropy and work to network in the community to learn pressing issues."
