February Member Spotlight

Meet Debra Jacobs
President & CEO
The Patterson Foundation

In January 2009, Debra Jacobs became the President and CEO of The Patterson Foundation (TPF) based in Sarasota, Florida. TPF strengthens people, organizations, and communities in ways that foster wide participation around shared quality of life values.

Before transitioning to TPF, Debra was President of the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, based in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to the Selby Foundation, she was responsible for the administration of eight other independent foundations. As a former bank executive, she learned there is more than money needed to build a vibrant region.

What is your involvement with Florida Philanthropic Network?

"TPF has been a long-time FPN member because by connecting with other philanthropic leaders, we will learn, share, evolve and strengthen our region."

Name one thing you find special about the Florida philanthropic community.

"Whether natives or newcomers, Florida is far from apathetic, rather rich with natural, intellectual and financial resources."

Are there any partnerships or collaborations you have found most meaningful to you in the last year?

"As TPF works in community to engage people, business, nonprofits, government, and media, each of TPF’s initiatives from Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Digital Access for All and DeSoto County Ahead are thriving because of collaborations.

With the unfathomable fury from Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton, TPF’s catalyzing donations and matches to both the Season of Sharing and Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund raised upwards of $12 million thanks to the vibrant heartbeat of philanthropy and Community Foundation of Sarasota’s time-tested and trusted reputation."

What's the biggest challenge you've faced with your philanthropic efforts? How have you overcome them?

"What others might call challenges, TPF views as opportunities….whether to help move communities from silos to systems or from a scarcity to an abundance mindset.  By being in community listening, learning and acting, change happens at the speed of trust."

What fuels your cup – in life and at work?

"When one has a pulse, one has a purpose.  Discover and embrace it!"

Can you share one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a career in philanthropy?

      "Be a possibilitarian."
